Clinical Study on 3-Year-Fluoride Iontophoresis Program for Lao Children

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective: For the oral health promotion for Laos children, the fluoride application program as one of the important preventive project has been done for 3 years at Vientiane city in Laos, and the preventive effects were examined by oral examination.
Methods: 2,146 of school children were participated divided with 2 groups as 1,127 of experimental group and 1,019 in the control group, at age 7 to 11 years, from the year 2013 to 2016, through supplying the 2% NaF was applied with the ion tophoresis method on the permanent molar teeth for the experimental group children, otherwise serve the oral health education as tooth-brushing instruction only for the control group children. 4 times oral examinations were done at before the program, a year later, 2 years later and 3 years later. The data was suggested every year and compared with the experimental group and the control, in order to estimate the preventive effect for fluoride application program.
Results: Caries prevention effect was revealed as 34.4% in 3rd grade, ?21.2% in 4th grade 15.8% in 5th grade estimated with DMFT index and compared with the control group, more over, 42.3%, 7.6%, and 49.4% of prevention effect measured by DMFS index.
Conclusion: Fluoride applicaion program was effective to promote the oral health and contributed for the prevention of dentalcaries for Laos school children, so it was recommended to extend the program more widely in Laos.
